Vickers Hardness Testers

The Vickers Hardness testers test the hardness properties of various metals and many other materials.

Digital Vickers hardness tester is a high-tech and new product combining the optics, mechanic and electrics features. It adopts load cell control system, improves the precision of the test force and the repeatability and stability of the indicating value. It adopts the high resolution color touch screen which is visual and clear, easy to operate, display backlight adjustable with energy-saving mode.

With digital measuring eyepiece, no need for checking the table or inputting the diagonal of the indentation, it can directly show the test force, indentation length, dwell time, test numbers, conversion scale, date and time.

As long as press the eyepiece button after measuring the indentation length, it can automatically get the hardness value and shows on the screen. Test results can be saved in real time with automatic calculation of maximum, minimum and average value, the data can be arbitrary deleted and printed out, and with RS232 interface for connecting to the computer. It can be equipped with LCD video measuring device and CCD image automatic measuring system.

The Vickers Hardness Testers are suitable for ferrous metal, non-ferrous metals, IC thin sections, coatings, ply-metals; glass, ceramics, agate, precious stones, thin plastic sections etc.; hardness testing such as that on the depth and the trapezium of the carbonized layers and quench hardened layers.

Vickers Hardness Testers: Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a Vickers Hardness Tester used for?

A Vickers Hardness Tester is a precision instrument used to measure the hardness of various materials, particularly metals, ceramics, and composites. It is ideal for testing thin sections, surface coatings, and small parts that require a micro-indentation method. Because it uses a diamond pyramid indenter, it can be used on a wider range of materials compared to other hardness testing methods.

2. Which materials can be tested using the Vickers method?

Our Vickers Hardness Testers are versatile and suitable for:

  • Metals: Ferrous and non-ferrous metals, carborized steels, quenched steels, and Al-alloys.

  • Small Components: IC thin sections and thin plastic sections.

  • Brittle Materials: Glass, ceramics, agate, and precious stones.

  • Surface Treatments: Testing the depth of carbonized or quench-hardened layers and ply-metals.

3. What international standards do IDM Instruments' Vickers Testers comply with?

Accuracy and compliance are critical for quality control. Our instruments meet the following global standards:

  • ISO 6507: Metallic materials — Vickers hardness test.

  • ASTM E92: Standard Test Methods for Vickers Hardness and Knoop Hardness.

  • JIS Z2244: Japanese Industrial Standards for Vickers hardness testing.

  • GB/T 4340.2: Verification and calibration of testing machines.

4. How does the digital touch screen improve the testing process?

The integrated high-resolution color touch screen simplifies the workflow by providing a visual interface for the load cell control system. It allows operators to adjust the dwell time, test force, and conversion scales directly. The digital measuring eyepiece removes the need for manual lookup tables; simply press the eyepiece button after measuring the indentation, and the hardness value is calculated and displayed automatically.

5. Can the test results be exported for reporting?

Yes. The Vickers Hardness Tester features an RS232 interface, allowing for seamless connection to a computer for data transfer. It also supports real-time saving of results and can automatically calculate the maximum, minimum, and average values for a series of tests. For advanced analysis, the unit can be equipped with a CCD image automatic measuring system or an LCD video device.

6. What is included in the standard Vickers Hardness Tester package?

When you purchase from IDM Instruments, you receive a complete testing kit, including:

  • Instrument Main Body with 10× Digital Measuring Eyepiece.

  • Diamond Vickers Indenter and various objectives (10×, 20×).

  • Multiple test tables (Big Plane and V-shaped).

  • Standard Hardness Blocks (400~500 HV5 and 700~800 HV30) for calibration.

  • Necessary tools, power cables, and a dust cover.

7. Why choose a Vickers tester over a Rockwell or Brinell tester?

The primary advantage of the Vickers test is that it uses a single indenter (the diamond pyramid) for all materials, regardless of hardness. Unlike the Brinell or Rockwell methods, which may require different indenters or loads, the Vickers scale is continuous and consistent. This makes it the preferred choice for research, laboratory analysis, and testing very thin or exceptionally hard materials.
