Din Abrasion Tester

The Din Abrasion Tester is primarily useful to determine the abrastion resistance of vulcanized rubber. This is against abrasive forces using a cylindrical type rotary drum. It may also be useful to determine the resistance to abrasion of other types of materials.

Basically, the Din Abrasion Tester determines abrasion quality of flexible materials. For example, rubber, tires, leather and others. It complies with various international standards.

To test, abrade the test sample which is cylindrical in shape across a surface. this is with the set abrasiveness for a specific distance under a certain load.

Din Abrasion Calculation as per standards

DIN 53516 for wear abrasion is to test sample mass loss by rubbing on abrasive under cetain pressure. Caculate the volume loss (mm3) by sample density and the loss of standard rubber. It is an accepted method (standard) to rate the abrasion resistance between rubber compounds. Operators, engineers and manufacturers use it to compare differing cover rubber products. There are separate tests for tear or gouging resistance, which some argue is a part of abrasion. It is a matter of scale.

This standard sets out a method for determining the resistance of rubber to abrasive forces using a rotating cylindrical drum device.

Rotary Drum

The Rotary Drum Abrasion Tester is manufactured according the specifications of testing standards ASTM D5963, and ISO 4649. The test specimen is rotated while it is moved laterally across the cylinder. This assures uniform contact of the test specimen to the abrasive material. Also, the specimen holder can be locked into a fixed place.

Abrasion Related Definitions

  • Abrasion resistance — the resistance to wear resulting from mechanical action upon a surface.
  • Relative volume loss — the volume loss, in cubic millimetres, caused by an ‘abrasive grade’ of cloth equal to 200 mg loss of the standard rubber measured under the same specified conditions.
  • Smearing rubber— a rubber which, when interposed between successive tests in standard rubbers, produces a mass loss greater than 10 percent.

Din Abrasion Test Principle

A cylindrical rubber test piece is subjected to the action of an abrasive cloth (see Clause 5.2) of a specified abrasive grade at a specified contact pressure and over a given area. Abrasion takes place over one of the flat, end surfaces of the cylindrical test piece. The abrasive cloth is attached to the surface of a rotating cylindrical drum against which the test piece is held and across which it is traversed. The loss in mass of the test piece is accurately determined and the volume loss is calculated from the density of the material.

Importance and Applications of Abrasion resistance test for Rubber

Abrasion resistance is a performance factor of paramount importance for many rubber products, such as tires, conveyor belts, power transmission belts, hoses, footwear, and floor covering. A test capable of measuring resistance to abrasion of rubber, including uniformity of wear behavior under abrasive/frictional service conditions is therefore highly desirable. This test method is suitable for comparative testing, quality control, specification compliance testing, referee purposes, and research and development work.
