The Coefficient of Friction Tester - Standard unit can measure the static & kinetic COF (peak). The COF tester can measure COF of paper, plastic, films, Static is from a resting position. To measure, it continually moves testing surfaces in a relative motion to give an accurate kinetic COF (dynamic) result.
This model features a stationary sled with a moving plane. It also comes with the option of computer software to record data. Moreover, it can also carry our peel testing. This method describes a horizontal plane procedure for the determination of the coefficient of static and kinetic friction of paper measured when sliding against itself.
This horizontal instrument requires some means of movement of the specimen in relation to the surface upon which it rests. The coefficient of friction (COF) is measured directly from the resistance to tangential motion and the applied weight pressing two pieces of test samples together.

Kinetic COF & Static COF
This method describes a horizontal plane procedure for the determination of the coefficient of static and kinetic friction of paper measured when sliding against itself. Static COF relates to the force required to initiate movement between two surfaces while kinetic COF relates to the force required to cause continuation of the movement at uniform speed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Static and Kinetic COF?
Static COF measures the initial force required to start movement between two surfaces (the "peak" resistance). Kinetic COF (or dynamic friction) measures the force needed to maintain uniform motion once movement has begun. The IDM Standard COF Tester accurately captures both values in a single test sequence.
Which industry standards does this COF Tester comply with?
This instrument is engineered to meet several international testing standards, including ASTM D1894 (Plastic Film), ISO 8295 (Plastics), TAPPI T816 (Corrugated/Fiberboard), and TAPPI 549 (Uncoated Writing/Printing Paper). It also supports ASTM D3330 for 180° peel testing with an optional fixture.
Can the test data be exported for quality reporting?
Yes. While the unit provides direct readings, the optional COF Data Acquisition Software allows for real-time display, statistical analysis, and results averaging. All data can be seamlessly exported to Excel, which is ideal for maintaining digital quality control records.
What materials can be tested with the Standard model?
The tester is highly versatile and used for flexible packaging, plastic films, paper, foils, coatings, composites, and even metals. It features a stationary sled and moving plane design, ensuring stability across a wide range of surface textures.
Are cutting templates included with the instrument?
Yes, the Standard unit includes dedicated cutting templates for both the Sled (63mm x 63mm) and the Moving Plane. This ensures that samples are sized precisely according to standard requirements, reducing operator error and ensuring repeatable results.
