Film Free Shrink Tester

Film Free Shrink Tester measures the Linear Thermal Shrinkage or Free Shrink. It is the irreversible and rapid reduction in linear dimension, in a specified direction. This usually occurs in plastic film exposed to high temperatures. So this instrument measures effect of temperature on plastic. Thus, shrinkage is important factor in manufacturing of laminates and films.

The Film Free Shrink Tester consists of a small, circular aluminium block. It is electrically heated and controlled by a temperature controller. Therefore, its design is robust. The testing process includes using aluminium foil discs with silicon oil. Then, accelerate shrinkage by placing test specimen in the instrument. It allows testing at various temperatures.  The result is accurate. And is easy to read on the display. Shrinkage of a particular material produced by a particular process may be characterized by this test method by making measurements at several temperatures through the shrinkage range of the material.

Heat Shrinkage Test Apparatus

This equipment complies to GB/T 13519 and ASTM D 2732. Thus, is applicable to test of all kinds of films in liquid under various temperatures. Testing the percentage shrink of a film ensures that it is suitable for a particular packaging application. And establishes the correct temperature for that application. Thus, this machine is useful within the packaging, film and plastic industry. It can also be useful to test sealing of various products. Especially, for the food industry.

The shrink effect is due to internal forces which is a result of heat release during film manufacturing. Thus, it is also known as linear thermal shrink. The amount of shrinkage is dependent on the film type, thickness and sealing temperature. The easy control allows performing the test in seconds. Thus, saving time and allowing repeatability.

Shrinkage of Plastic Film and Sheeting Test Method

As a result of the manufacturing process, internal stresses may be locked into the film which can be released by heating. The temperature at which shrinkage will occur is related to the processing techniques employed to manufacture the film and may also be related to a phase transition in the base resin. The magnitude of the shrinkage will vary with the temperature of the film. This test method covers determination of the degree of unrestrained linear thermal shrinkage at given specimen temperatures of plastic film and sheeting of 0.76 mm (0.030 in.) thickness or less. This test method does not cover shrinkage from loss of solvent in some materials. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to inch-pound units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

Heat Shrinkage Test Procedure

  • Plug in and switch on Power.
  • Operation of Temperature Indicator: Once the unit is on, push the Temperature Indicator Up or Down arrow keys to set the temperature. The maximum temperature pre-set is 250. The AL1 light indicates it has reached its set temperature..
  • Preparing Sample : Use 50 mm dia. Template supplied to cut samples.
  • Place a few drops of Silicon Oil on the Aluminium Disc supplied and place the sample on the Aluminium Disc.
  • Place the Aluminium Disc onto the Heating Platen once it has reached the desired temperature.
  • Leave on Platen for desired test time.
  • Pick up Disc with Tweezers and place on cool flat surface for heat to be absorbed.
  • Record relative measurements
