Constant Displacement Foam Fatigue Tester

The Constant Displacement Foam Fatigue Tester is a floor standing instrument with four daylight sample areas. That is two on the left and two on the right side of the machine. The instrument compresses the samples between 4 compression areas for the relevant amount of time set on a cycle counter. Holding the samples in place is via a double sided tape.

The compression platens for samples measure 500mm x 500mm. Thus, meet international standards. The center, top and bottom plates are stationary while the upper and below center platens simultaneously move up and down. The cam allows adjusting to specific compression percentages.

Overall, the Constant Displacement Foam Fatigue Tester tests the quality of foam.

Scope of Constant Displacement Foam Fatigue Tests

Pounding testing machine consists of a pounding plate connected to push rods, one at each side and held in horizontal position. These push rods are guided to move vertically by fixed sleeves and are driven vertically by means of a motor which rotates a crank disk, the crank disk and push rods connected by a connecting rod. This connecting rod is adjustable, the length of the stroke of the plunger therefor being adjustable. Table upon which the samples to be tested are placed, a revolution counter is attached to the machine to record the number of poundings suffered by the sample, at the rate of four times per second.

The samples are supported on a smooth, rigid horizontal surface larger than the sample and vented with holes approximately 6mm in diameter and at approximately 20mm pitch to allow escape of air from the sample during compression.

Test Sample Placement constant load displace foam fatigue tests

If you are using 1 (one) sample on each plate (both testing areas) be sure to place it centrally on the plates. If more than one sample per plate, place the samples evenly on plate so that the force when compressing is not out of balance. Double sided adhesive tape can be used on one side of the sample, to hold the samples in place if needed.

Testing procedure

The initial thickness (t ¹) of the sample shall be determined as. The sample shall be placed with the cavities face resting on the perforated plate. The pounding machine shall be so adjusted that the stroke of the compression plate is equal to 20% of the measured thickness of the sample and that at the top of its stroke, the plate compresses the sample by 40% (and therefor by 60% at the bottom of the stroke).

After pounding the sample for 60s (240 poundings) the initial product indentation hardness index is recorded using a IDM foam compression machine. The sample shall then be returned to the pounding machine so that the sample received a total of 250,000 poundings. On completion of the required pounding, the sample is removed and left to recover in an unstrained state for 30 min. After this time the sample is again measured for its thickness and indentation hardness index.

  1. Open the top and the bottom testing space by winding the screws so your sample size will fit between the compression plates.
  2. 2Measure the thickness of your sample.
  3. The sample(s) should be placed within the compression spaces (upper & lower)
  4. The pounding machine stroke shall be adjusted until the compression plate is equal to 20% of the measured thickness of the sample. E.g. if your sample is 100mm thick, then you would adjust the crank disk to 20mm on the graduation on the crank disk. Do these adjustments at the top of the crank disk (See Adjusting the Crank disk section). Stroke = Material Thickness x 0.2
  5. Push the “Top” button before any adjustments, to make the moving plate and the crank disk return to the up position where you would take your reference ruler measurements from.
  6. Adjust bottom screw to compress sample, by 40% e.g. 60mm gap. Measure this distance with a ruler between bottom of top plate and the top of the moving plate.
  7. Repeat same procedure for the top plate and sample
  8. After pounding sample for 60 seconds e.g. 240 poundings the initial product indentation hardness should be measured and recorded in a foam compression testing machine
  9. The sample should be returned to pounding machine so the sample receives a total of 250,000 cycles.
  10. When pounding is complete, remove samples and leave them to recover for at least 30 minutes. After this time the sample can be measured for its thickness and indentation hardness.
