Our Coefficient of Friction Tester with Variable Speed is the latest model. The Coefficient of Friction Tester is fast, reliable, and accurate in determining the coefficient of friction.
Our range of COF Testers determines the static and kinetic friction of plastic film, sheeting, paper, and other sheet material coatings. Our Coefficient of Friction Tester with Variable Speed has a small benchtop design. Thus, makes it easy to use in a laboratory or setup out on the production floor for offline testing as needed. The horizontal COF employs the use of a stationary sled with a moving plane. The coefficient of friction is measured directly from the resistance to tangential motion and the applied weight pressing the two pieces of sample together.
The C0055-M2 model has all the same features as the C0055-M1 with the addition of variable speed from 50 – 300mm/min using a stepper motor for acuate variable speed control. Once a test is completed and the sample has been unloaded. The unit will return to the start point “HOME” ready for the next test. And controls are via an LCD touch screen for stop, start, home and speed changes. This COF Tester tests as per various testing standards including ASTM D5264. This model guarantees maximum accuracy and precision. And it comes with the option of computer software to record data – see Software. Peel Testing can also be carried out on this unit.
The Coefficient of Friction Tester has an optional software feature that can record the following results/ data:
- Dynamic real-time display
- Statistical analysis
- Results averaging
- Screen print out
- Data export to Excel
- Test identification entry
- Peak force value

Coefficient of Friction Test of Plastic Films - ASTM D1894
Measurements of frictional properties may be made on a film or sheeting samples when sliding over itself or over other substance. The coefficients of friction are related to the slip properties of plastic films used in packaging applications. These method s provide data for quality control purposes in film manufacturing. Slip properties are due to additives in plastic films, for example, polyethylene. These additives have varying degrees of compatibility with the film matrix. Some of them bloom, or exude to the surface, lubricating it and making it more slippery. Because this blooming action may not always be uniform on all areas of the film surface, values from these tests may be limited in reproducibility.
Coefficient of Kinetic Friction for Wax Coatings - ASTM D2534
This test method covers the determination of the coefficient of kinetic friction for a petroleum wax coating or wax-based hot melt coating when sliding over itself.
COF test for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tape - ASTM D3330
These test methods cover the measurement of the peel adhesion of pressure-sensitive tapes.
COF Test of corrugated and solid fiberboard - ASTM D4521
This test method covers the determination of the coefficient of static friction of corrugated and solid fiberboard or of the materials used to make such board.
Seal Strength of Flexible Barrier Materials - ASTM F88
Seal strength is a quantitative measure for use in process validation, process control, and capability. Seal strength is not only relevant to opening force and package integrity, but to measuring the packaging processes' ability to produce consistent seals. Seal strength at some minimum level is a necessary package requirement, and at times it is desirable to limit the strength of the seal to facilitate opening.
Supported 180°—The least flexible tail is supported flat against a rigid alignment plate held in one grip. The more flexible tail is folded 180° over the seal and is held in the opposing grip while the test is being conducted.
Plastics - Film and sheeting - ISO 8295
Specifies a method for determining the coefficients of starting and sliding friction of plastics film and sheeting when sliding over the same or other substances. Serves primarily for quality control and does not give a comprehensive assessment of the machinability.
Writiing and Printing Paper
This requires a horizontal plane procedure for the determination of the coefficient of static and kinetic friction of paper measured when sliding against itself.
