Wet Din Abrader

The Wet Din Abrader determines the resistance of rubber to abrasion using a cylindrical drum device. Its design and manufacturing technique complies with relevant international standards. It is completely made from Stainless Steel. Thus, you can perform tests with water. This ensures the quality of the material remains safe.

The method involves determining the volume loss of a rubber through abrasion. That is by rubbing over a specific grade of abrasive cloth.

Wet Din Abrader Apparatus

The Din Abrader consists of the following parts:
  • Test piece/Sample holder – consisting of a cylindrical opening (with an adjustable diameter from 15,5 to 16,3)
  • Rotating Cylinder/Drum – having a diameter of 150 ± 0.2mm and a length of approximately 500mm. The cylinder is rotated at a frequency of 40 ± 1 min –1
  • Abrasive Cloth – used as the abrasive medium, it is attached to the drum, making sure it fits around the whole cylinder. (Maximum Gap 2mm)
  • Limit Switches – located at the top left side of the rotating cylinder. The limit nearest to the front of machine, is used to stop the motor when the pivot arm has crossed over a lifting cam. The rear limit is used to stop the motor when the sample has been completely abraded or if the sample holder is touching the drum, this will help to prevent damage.
  • Start and Stop Buttons – located on front panel, the machine cannot be started when the pivot arm is raised, if the pivot arm is on top of lifting cam or if sample holder is touching drum. The machine can be stopped at any stage.
  • Spring Loaded Brass Half Nut – located behind rotating cylinder, is required to drive the pivot arm laterally along the cylinder. To disengage the half-nut lift the pivot arm and push against the spring pressure of the assembly towards the back of the machine, this will allow the half-nut to clear the thread and the pivot arm to be moved to the start position.
  • Gear Rack – located above the rotating cylinder, is used to rotate the sample during a test. Can be removed with a 3mm Hex Key if no rotation is required.
  • Lifting Cams – are fixed to the gear rack, to allow the pivot arm to raise and stop a test, when the required distance has been covered. Can be removed with a 3mm Hex Key.
  • Water Outlet - fitted to the side of the machine to enable drainage of water.

Wet Din Abrader Test Preparation

Initially, 3 double-sided adhesive tapes are placed equidistantly onto the drum. A mark is provided on the drum as a guide. The abrasive sheet is now attached to the drum and held in position by the adhesive tape. Here, care must be taken that the drum is entirely covered and that the joint between the two ends of the abrasive sheet is positioned over an adhesive tape. The ends of the abrasive sheets must not overlap, should this occur, the paper should be cut shorter accordingly. The gap between the ends of the sheet must not exceed 2 mm.

Specimen Preparation

The specimen must be cylindrical in shape and have a diameter of 16  0.2 mm. The specimens are prepared using the hollow drill device which is supplied with the Abrasion Tester. The cutter can be used with any vertical drilling machine. The drilling machine speed should not exceed 1000 rpm; when preparing samples which are less than 50 Shore A, this can be slightly increased as required. The cutter knife edge should be protected from damage by placing a piece of 1 – 1.5 thick cardboard under the sample sheet.
The sample must have a minimum thickness of 6 mm, thus ensuring that it can be clamped in the sample holder. If the rubber is too thin, the required minimum thickness can be achieved by placing and gluing a number of rubber sheets together.

Setting the Abrasion path

In most cases, an abrasion path of 40 m is selected. In special cases, where large volumetric losses are encountered, an abrasion path of 20 m can be set. The abrasion path is selected by removing/replacing the lifting cams that are screwed into sockets set at the 20 m and 40 m positions on the gear rack. Screwing the cam into the first socket from the left sets the 40 m abrasion path. (It can be kept in this position permanently). When using the 20 m abrasion path, simply screw in the lifting cam with the rising edge aligned with the marked sticker line. It can be used on either the left or the right hand holes, thus allowing either side of the drum to be used.

Setting the specimen holder for static or rotational testing

If, as dictated by the testing standard, the sample should remain static during test, the rack must be removed away from the toothed pinion. To perform this, the screws are removed, the rack removed. The lock screw should now be tightened. For tests with rotating specimen, the rack and pinion are brought together and the lock screw is loosened. The toothed rack should be pushed to the rear when the screws are retightened.

Selecting the specimen loading

The specimen must be applied to the abrasive sheet under a loading of 10  0.2N. This is achieved by placing the supplementary weight of 5N onto the specimen holder assembly (weight 5N). When the 10N weight is also provided, specimen loads of 15N & 20N can be utilized.

Positioning the specimen in the specimen holder

The specimen must project from its holder by 2 +/- 0.2 mm. Specimen insertion is performed by carefully lifting the pivot arm to the rear of the machine and unscrewing the specimen positioning screw by 8 to 10 turns. Now loosen the specimen holder lock nut. Here, care must be taken that the nut does not interfere with the specimen holder. The specimen is placed into the gauge provided and the gauge is applied to the sample holder and pushed such that the specimen enters the holder and the gauge comes into contact with the specimen holder. The gauge is held in this position and the specimen positioning screw is carefully turned until it comes into contact with the specimen. Following this, the sample holder lock nut is tightened.
The specimen is now positioned correctly and no re-adjustment is required for further samples, provided they are of the same thickness.

Water Sequence

The Wet Din Abrader can be used to be tested alongside water. When testing with water, add enough water to cover the bottom 1cm of the drum. Upon completion of testing, drain the water out using the water drain outlet.
